Horizontal Ring Die Wood Pellet Mill Structure

Ring die wood pellet mill is made up of a base frame, motor, coupling, gearbox, main shaft, hollow shaft, rollers, ring die, force-feeding system, feeding system, and control system.

1. The feeding system is the feeder auger on top of the pellet mill, it adopts frequency control to change the feeding speed by VFD, thus avoiding material block in the pellet mill and overload, from the feeder auger, raw material go to force feeder by gravity.

2. The force feeder pushes the raw material go to the pelletizing room, force feeder is an important part of the horizontal ring die pellet mill even it is a small part because the bulk density of biomass material is low, the mobility is not good, so the force feeder can help to push the material into pelletizing chamber.

3. In a pelletizing room of the horizontal ring die pellet mill, there is a feeder scraper, rollers, ring die, main shaft, and hollow shaft, the rollers are fixed on the main shaft which is stable during machine working, but the roller shell is running, the ring die is fixed on the hollow shaft by a hoop, the ring die is running during machine working. After the material goes to the pelletizing room, the rollers and scraper will press the material into holes on the ring die, the material will press out from the holes to get pellets. The diameter and effective extrusion length of the holes decide the size of final pellets, the ratio between effective extrusion length of the hole on the ring die and diameter of the hole is called compression ratio, which is an important data of the ring die, it decides the quality of final pellets. According to the character of different raw materials, we can make a special compression ratio ring die for one kind of raw material, so just change the ring die can make the pellet mill suitable for different raw materials.

Ring Die Pellet Mill

In complete pellet production line, ring die pellet mill is the key equipment to process raw materials like wood chips, tree braches, sawdust, logs, crop straw, etc. into pellets. The origin of the name of ring die pellet machine is derived from its structure with the die shaped of “circle ring”. In the ring, there are 2 or 3 rollers inside to rotate and extrude the material in the middle, thus the material go through the die holes to be cylindrical pellets.

Types of Ring Die Pellet Mill Machine – Vertical & Horizontal

Ring die pellet mill machine is divided into two types: Vertical Ring Die Pellet Mill & Horizontal Ring Die Pellet Mill. Each type has its own unique features.

Vertical Ring Die Pellet Mill Working Principle

The vertical ring die pellet mill is specially designed to press the material which is hard to be bonded and shaped. The material can be loaded into the pelleting chamber in its own weight. Then, under the strong pressure between the rotating roller and the ring die, the material enters into the die holes to be formed into pellets. The vertical ring die pellet mill is called light-weight material pellet mill as well. Because vertical pellet mill is more suitable for managing the materials with light weight, such as, rice hull, grass with light weight, straw, melon and fruit hull and the material which is not easy to form.

Vertical pellet mill the ring die is fixed, and the roller rotate in high speed. The shaped pellets will pushed out directly from the holes, so there is no second hit between pellets, the pellets length are more uniform and less sawdust. Higher successful rate for pellet making.

Horizontal Ring Die Pellet Mill Working Principle

Differ from the vertical ring die pellet mill, the horizontal ring die pellet mill adopts the feeding auger to feed the material into the pelleting chamber through the stock bin. The material begin to be soft in the sealed pelleting chamber, and under the great extrusion between rotating ring die in a high speed and the roller, the soft material is pressed into the holes uniformly distributed on the die. After that, the formed cylindrical solid body out of the holes will be cut by the knife, thus discharged through the export hole.

Features between Vertical VS Horizontal Ring Die Pellet Mill

As the different types of ring die pelleting mill, the two type of ring die pellet machine have their own unique advantages.

Vertical Ring Die Pellet Mill

Vertical ring die pellet mill is applicable for difficult molding materials with low adhesion rate, for example peanut shell, rice husk, fruit shell and sunflower husk; branches, bark, stem and other wood residues, various of crop stalks etc.

The new generation gearbox adopts high-precision gears, automatic lubricant pump system, keeping the gearbox working stability and warranty period.

In this vertical ring die pellet mill, the die holes with equidistant distribution are centered by the output shaft, making more powerful and stability of machine working.

Automatic lubrication system. The gear box is configured with circulation pump lubricating system controlled by the pinch roller to inject oil in timing. The oil pump motor can lubricate with automation and circulation making sure the shaft can be fully lubricated thus making the pellet machine running safely.

The blower system is equipped in side of the working bin, controlling the working time freely.

Feeding vertically with frequency conversion makes the feedstock uniform with no arch camber and easy heat dissipation.

Flat Die VS Ring Die Pellet Mill

According to the production capacity, pellet mills also can be divided into flat die pellet mill and ring die pellet mill.Flat die pellet mill use flat dies with many holes. When the material is introduced into the top of the die, the drum or die can start to rotateand the material will be squeezed through the holes in the die. A cutter on the other side of the mold will cut the exposed particles out of the mold. Ring die pellet mill use ring dies with radial grooves. The material is first fed into the inside of the mold and distributed evenly by the spreader. Then they will be compressed by two rollers through the die hole, and the particles coming out of the die will be cut out by two cutters.

Feeding Method: The ring die granulator adopts mechanical feeding method. The raw material enters the granulation chamber at high speed by means of rotary centrifugation. The feed is distributed by the oil cloth machine to achieve uniform feeding; the flat die granulator falls into the granulation chamber by its own weight to achieve uniform feeding.

Pellet Formation: Flat die types have a circular perforated disk on which two or more rollers rotate and force the material through the holes to form pellets. Ring die presses have a rotating perforated ring on which rollers (usually two or three) press the material to the inner circumference to form pellets.

Adjustment of the rollers: The ring die pellet granulator machine utilizes two screws on the eccentric gear located in the center of the rolls to adjust the pressure. The flat die granulator adopts the way of center adjusting screw. It has the characteristics of bearing hundreds of tons of top pressure, falling smoothly, hitting softly, and being evenly pressed.

Different Pressure: At the same die diameter, the rollers of the ring die feed granulator machine are limited by the die diameter and therefore the pressure. The pressure of the flat die feed granulator machine is adjustable. The flat die diameter is not limited by the die diameter, which can expand the inner bearing space. The use of large bearings not only enhances the bearing capacity of the rollers, but also prolongs the service life.

Production Capacity: The maximum output of the flat die granulator is about 80-1000 kg/hour, while the maximum output of the ring die granulator is about 500-4000kg per hour.

Flat die vs ring die pellet mill which one is better?

The flat die wood pellet granulator machine has low energy consumption and high fluidity, and is suitable for small family workshops

Ring die wood pellet mill generate less wear and tear when pelletizing. Ring die pellet mills being adopted in most large scale pellet production lines. The ring die granulator also has the characteristics of good granulation shape and high density (1-1.3%). Notes on Biomass Pellet Raw Materials

Raw material types and features can exert great influence on biomass pellet production. For example:

–Biomass pellet made from hard wood has smaller productivity than that made from soft wood as hard wood like birch, elm are drier and denser than soft wood like pine, spruce and firs, thus wood pellet capacity is elastic.

–Raw material should not be completely fine powder, although the fiber material in powder is in favor of wood pellet forming, the powder should be 3-5mm,neither too small nor too big.

So for super quality wood pellets production, choosing the proper material type is significant.

Crushing process—–crusher/hammer mill

Drying priocess—–Rotary Dryers

The best moisture content to pelletizing is about 14-16%. Our new Air-Current Rotary Dryer is made up of Burning Stove and Main Rotary Dryer, which can realize to reduce the moisture from 50% to 10%, and save about 30% energy consumption comparing the old Rotary Dryer. Our burning stove is fueled by coal and wood material, which can save electricity consumption largely. If the users want to use the other fuel such as gas and electricity, one Burner is necessary, but the extra cost will be charged.

Pelletizing Process—–Ring die pellet mill

(1). The lubrication system for wood pellet mill adopts the tracing and inspecting system controlled by the microcomputer. When the temperature of the bearing is over the normal temperature, the microcomputer will start the round closed Auto-Lubrication System to lubricate the bearings, which complete solved the trouble of lubricating roller depending on the operation experience. (2). Driving Gear adopts the high precision gear transmission structure. The wear bearing is made from China Biggest Bearing Manufacturer according to our special requests. The ring die adopts the hoop fastening method, which increased the speed of discharge (3). Cooling and screening process—–Pellet coolers

The temperature of the pellet is about 70 degree, and the moisture content of the wood pellet is about 15%, so we need use Cooler to reduce about 3-4% moisture, in this way, the pellet is easy to store and transport.
